More Information

Is it West Lake Longjing?

No.West Lake Longjing tea is different from Longjing tea.

To put it simply, the scope of Longjing tea is wider. The flat green tea produced in Zhejiang Province can be called Longjing tea, such as Qiantang Longjing and Yuezhou Longjing. The Dafo Longjing大佛龙井 in Xinchang County and Yuexiang Longjing越乡龙井 in Shengzhou that we are familiar with belong to the "Yuezhou Longjing".

West Lake Production Area:

The production area is located in the West Lake Scenic Area and West Lake District of Hangzhou City. The quality characteristics of West Lake Longjing tea are: green in color, flat, smooth, fragrant, and mellow in taste. The output accounts for 7% to 10% of the total Longjing tea;

Qiantang Production Area:

The production area is located on both sides of the Qiantang River, including Xiaoshan District and Yuhang District of Hangzhou City, as well as counties and cities such as Lin'an, Fuyang, Tonglu, Jiande, and Chun'an. The quality characteristics of Qiantang Longjing tea are: green color, flat, smooth, with chestnut fragrance, mellow and refreshing, and the output accounts for about 28%~30% of the total Longjing tea;

Yuezhou Production Area:

Yuezhou Longjing: The production area is located in the Shaoxing area of Ancient Yuezhou, and a few surrounding cities and counties, including Xinchang, Shengzhou, Shaoxing, Zhuji, Pan'an, Dongyang, Shangyu, Tiantai and other counties and cities. The quality characteristics of Yuezhou Longjing tea are: green in color, flat, smooth, slightly downy, with chestnut aroma, rich and mellow, and its output accounts for 60% to 64% of the total Longjing tea.

Since the 1970s, many areas in Zhejiang have begun to fry Longjing tea, which is usually called Zhejiang Longjing. On this basis, with the approval of the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine No. 28 in 2001, the protection of the origin of Longjing tea has been implemented. Longjing tea originally produced in Xihu District of Hangzhou is called West Lake Longjing; Longjing tea produced in other production areas in Zhejiang is called Qiantang Longjing and Yuezhou Longjing, and the "Geographical Indication of Longjing Tea" can be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called West Lake Longjing?

West Lake Longjing has a history of 1,200 years. It is produced in the mountains around Longjing Village in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, hence its name. When Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty visited West Lake in Hangzhou, he praised Longjing tea and named the 18 tea trees under Shifeng Mountain as "Imperial Tea". Longjing tea has thus become famous in the world. Due to long-term quality control and word-of-mouth inheritance, it has become one of the most famous green teas in China today.

How to identify authentic Longjing tea produced in West Lake area?

① The dry tea is "brown rice color" with yellow-green color, not pure green; ② The aroma is the aroma of roasted beans + orchid; ③ The leaves are tender and evenly formed into flowers, and they expand when exposed to water; ④ The packaging has the anti-counterfeiting code of the Tea Growers Association, which can be scanned to verify the origin.

What is the difference between Longjing tea produced in West Lake area and Qiantang area?

Longjing tea has clear production areas. The West Lake production area is the core protection area of the Longjing tea national geographical indication, with unique soil and climate, and the tea soup has a strong chestnut aroma with orchid fragrance; the Qiantang production area is the production area around West Lake, with a strong stir-fried bean aroma. Both are hand-fried, and the output of the West Lake production area is scarce, so the price is higher.

What is the difference between laspangstore's first spring Longjing tea and West Lake Longjing?

The material of the first spring Longjing is Wuniuzao (early-growing tea tree variety), which can be picked in the Qiantang production area in early March. The dry tea is emerald green, with plump buds, and tastes sweet with a tender bean aroma, but its brewing resistance is lower than that of West Lake Longjing (traditional Longjing population variety). First spring longjing is suitable for tea lovers who pursue "freshness".

Why is Pre-qingming Longjing more precious?

Mingqian tea is the first buds picked before Qingming Festival. It is cold and has few pests. It has a high amino acid content and the tea soup is fresh and sweet. The Qiantang production area's Mingqian tea is available 5-7 days earlier than the West Lake production area. It is more cost-effective and suitable for staple food tea.

How to store longjing green tea?

Green tea storage needs to be protected from light, sealed, moisture-proof, and kept at low temperatures. It is recommended to use sealed bags to prevent oxidation of the tea leaves. It is best to store it in a refrigerator (0-5°C) and avoid storing it with odorous items. Long-term freezing is not recommended to avoid absorbing odors in the refrigerator.

Can green tea be cold brewed? How?

Yes. Cold brewing of green tea can reduce bitterness and release sweetness. The recommended ratio is 1g tea: 100ml cold water, sealed and refrigerated for 2-4 hours. It is recommended to use Longjing or Biluochun, add lemon slices or mint after cold brewing to cool down and relieve summer heat. Click here to purchase our cold brew bottles.
