Description

Ru Ware: A Contemporary Echo of a Millennia-Old Official Kiln
Ru ware, originating from the imperial court of Emperor Huizong during the Northern Song Dynasty, is renowned for its celestial azure glaze—often described as “the color of the sky after rain, just as the clouds part”—and its natural crackled texture. It is universally recognized as the pinnacle of Chinese ceramic art, exceedingly rare and precious. The modern inheritance of Ru ware is primarily carried forward through two lineages: one led by Taiwanese ceramic artists such as Cai Xiaofang蔡晓芳 and his Xiaofang Kiln(晓芳窑) , highly regarded for their mastery of replication techniques; the other comprises contemporary kilns in Jingdezhen, the Porcelain Capital, including respected brands like Qingdan青澹, Dongdao东道 , and Tianyu Yao(刘钦莹的天予窑), which innovate while preserving ancient methods. This piece is meticulously crafted by Jingdezhen artisans following traditional Ru ware techniques—elegant in form, warm and lustrous in glaze, and vivid in crackling. It is a graceful teaware companion that evolves gracefully with daily use over time.

Crackling: The Beauty of a “Breathing” Vessel
The most distinctive charm of Ru ware lies in its “crackling”. These cracks are not flaws but rather fine, ice-crackle patterns naturally formed during the cooling process after firing, due to the differing contraction rates of the body and glaze. With regular use and nurturing by tea, these lines gradually extend and deepen, creating a texture that is entirely unique—a personal trace of time and care. Each sip of tea becomes a dialogue with the vessel; each new line is a gift from the passage of time.

Care and Maintenance Suggestions

Nurturing the Crackles: Simply use for drinking tea as usual. For more even coloration of the crackle lines, it is recommended to use the cup consistently with one type of tea (such as white tea or ripe pu-erh) during initial use.

Cleaning: Rinse gently with clean water after use and allow to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated place. Avoid using detergent, as it may clog the fine crackle lines.

Note: Avoid sudden temperature changes to prolong the life of the piece. The beauty of its crackling lies in the natural, gradual process of daily use—enjoy the quiet evolution.
